Tips on Splits!

More advice on stretching!

Hi Adult Ballerinas! I thought I’d leave you with a quick post with a link to some split advice and a reminder (as mentioned in the article) to not force your splits!

While of sure some of you who may have worked towards splits for a little may get them with the #30daystretchchallenge, many of us won’t. My main point in making myself do the challenge was to develop a regular stretching habits (something my ballet routine was lacking) and track my progress via pictures (and using those pictures as a reminder about why I should be stretching everyday!)

I’m so glad that so many people have agreed to take part in the challenge! Have fun everyone!

What’s your favorite time of day to stretch? I either stretch in the evenings while watching TV or after ballet class (when I’m nice and warmed up!)

(P.S. My lovely MacBook has had some battery issues so keep your fingers crossed that it gets fixed today!)

30 Day Stretch Challenge

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m notoriously bad at not remembering to stretch. I’ll do it for a couple of days, and then totally forget. Then yesterday, Thanks & Kittens gave me a wonderful idea: A 30 Day Split Challenge (which she herself started doing a few days ago).

My goal is to stretch for a minimum of 30 minutes a day (on top of ballet classes!), focusing on my split stretches. Then, each day, I’ll post an embarrassing photo of how one of my split’s is coming along either on the blog or my Instagram or Twitter account.

How I wish one day my splits could be like this.

Have you ever been to a workout ballet class?

Here in Philadelphia (and in lots of other cities), there are a variety of ballet workout classes, from Pure Barre classes, to classes mixing ballet and pilates to Ballet Xtreme (the class that’s offered at Philadelphia Dance Fitness, where I have a membership). Lately, it seems ballet is becoming a way to become fit through both ballet classes as well as ballet workout classes (especially the Ballet Beautiful series).

While I wasn’t the biggest fan of Ballet Xtreme (rapid ballet movements and jumps done to hip hop and pop music), it was definitely a workout. But when I find I really need to work on perfecting my technique, the class focuses on doing rapid movements, focusing more on the movement and not technique. I definitely want to try it out in the near future (once I spend a while working on technique–which I am in 3 to 4 classes a week) and after I work on strengthening my ankles (all the jumping in the Xtreme class just killed them–so I ended up skipping most of them).

I do, however, want to try out a Pure Barre workout (because they focus on barre work and are supposed to be gentle on your joints, as they contain no jumping), but at $23 a class, I can’t really afford them right now on my current schedule. So, I plan on just doing more workouts from my Ballet Beautiful book (I’ve only done one so far–woops) and attending ballet as usual.

Have you ever tried out a ballet workout  class? Would you recommend them for beginners?

Group/Forum for Adult Beginner Ballerinas

As Legal Ballerina pointed out on her site that an awesome LiveJournal group exists for Adult Ballerinas called AdultBegBallet. Since there’s not a  lot of demand for one directly linked for this website, I figured it’d be a cool thing for those who were interested in a forum to look into. While the community hasn’t seen a lot of action recently, those who have posted have gotten a fair bit of responses so there’s definitely still some members who are active.

Thanks LB for the tip!

Also, I’d like to hold a TweetChat for people interested in ballet and this blog (and I figured it’d be the easiest way to hold a chat, especially since site’s like TweetChat make it easy to follow a certain #hashtag and most everyone has a Twitter account already). If you have any other suggestions for chats let me know as well as what day/times would work best for you.

Any other forum/group/community recommendations?
