Legwarmers Part 2: Making Your Own

Like some of the other adult ballerinas I know, I both crochet and knit. I’ve crocheted myself a few pairs of failed legwarmers. They always end up too short and slip like crazy if I actually try to wear them with ballet. I’m forever jealous of these wonderful looking legwarmers made by Knit Two, Pointe Two, Bake Two Together. Her pattern is here, and I’m tempted to break out my knitting needles to make them.

However, I’ve been searching for good patterns to crochet (I’m better at crocheting than I am at knitting) and I stumbled upon these, the Draft Dodger Legwarmers. Besides having a pun-y name, The cuffs at the top and the bottom made me think, even though these don’t contain elastic, they might not slip. I’m still working on them (they’re really long–if you’re considering making them I’d think about cutting back on how many stitches you start out with), but I’ll let you know how they turn out.

Have you made your own legwarmers? How’d they turn out?

  • I thought about making my own but I’m very impatient. Plus I’m terrible at reading directions. I can’t crochet in back loops! WTF?!

  • Ohhhhh, thank you for the love! As it happens I’m currently working on another pair featuring a slightly wacky braid cable from Vogue knitting…

I can’t crochet for the life of me (largely owing to an irrational fear of crochet hooks, seriously!) but I use my own pattern to knit (http://knittwopointetwo.wordpress.com/2011/10/05/knitting-pattern-super-snug-thigh-high-legwarmers/) and just move my increases to fit the cables in. The pattern’s fairly flexible in its basic format re stitch numbers, length etc, I just recommend a lot of trying on as you work up! I’ve used the patter for thigh high, knee high and ankle high plus I’m working on an adaptation to run ribbon up the back a little like corset lacing (but fear that may be over ambitious ;)).

Anyway, legwarmers are ace and I own about 15 pairs… *ahem*

    • I find it awesome that you’ve made that many legwarmers! I added a link to your pattern in the post so people can find it more easily.

  • I’m just getting back into knitting after taking a few years off. I would love to make myself a pair before class starts in a few weeks. May be too ambitious though. Thanks for the idea anyway! I’m saving it!
