Beginner Ballerina Profile: Kilee

IMG_0056Kilee started taking dance classes as a college student after in college to fill her schedule, but didn’t take ballet right away. Once she did, she fell in love with it.
When did you start doing ballet as an adult?
I started in January 2011. I was 24.

Did you ever take lessons as a kid?
I took 1 year of ballet and tap but didn’t like going.

Why did you decide to take ballet as an adult?
I needed extra hours in college to keep my status as a full-time student so I took a few dance classes. I didn’t take ballet at first because it didn’t fit my schedule. The following semester I did and I’ve loved it ever since.
Where do you take classes?
I take classes at a studio near Tulsa, OK.

What is your favorite part about ballet?
Barre. I actually love barre. I’m not sure why.

What is your least favorite part?
Beats. For some reason, beats just don’t click in my head. It’s getting better but my brain freaks outs when trying to add extra beats!

 Who/What is your ballet inspiration?
There are a few ballet dancers from the Tulsa and OKC ballets that I follow. When the companies post different photos, I’m just in awe of what they can do. It makes me want to work harder in able to hopefully get to that level.

What motivates you to keep dancing?
My love for ballet. Everyone has their ups and downs but I couldn’t imagine not doing ballet anymore.

Do you take any other dance classes?
Right now I’m also taking jazz and lyrical. I’ve also taken modern and tap in the past.

What are your hobbies outside of ballet?
I’m an engineer. I like photography a lot. I like to capture things people wouldn’t necessarily see right off like something hidden in the clouds. I also love sunsets.

What advice would you like to give to those who want to start ballet or have just started?
I’m often having to be reminded to not care of what others think. You might not be at the same level as someone else but always remember you are dancing for yourself. Everyone learns at different paces so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get it right away. Challenge yourself and have fun with it.
