Happy September!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend! Mine got off to a rough start on Thursday with a pretty rough ballet class. As I mentioned last week, I was dealing with some pretty painful top of my foot pain after a pre-pointe class so I was trying to stay off it as much as possible.

I almost decided not to go last Thursday because my toes were in an awful lot of pain because of the flats I wore to work that day (I have such a bad habit of wearing shoes that are horrible for my feet) but decided to go anyway. It was painful, and although my balance felt super off on my right side because of how painful it was, my instructor didn’t seem to notice.

Things got better on Saturday when I finally got a 3 mile run in after not getting any in for the past two weeks, although my calves were super tight afterwards. Unfortunately on Sunday I started coming down with a cold so the rest of my weekend was spent relaxing.

I started a new part-time job yesterday, but today I’m spending relaxing and working on a few blog things, including getting an editorial calendar organized and getting a jumpstart on working on the studio website (finally!)

I’m also working on crocheting a scarf today to get me into a fall-like mood. I’m loving this chunky bulky yarn. Any other crocheter or knitters out there?

But…back to Adult Ballerina Project. I’m loving this calendar printout for getting myself organized on the blog. I know a lot of people love reading tips on different ballet moves, so if you’d like to see something specific on the blog such as “How to do a better pirouette?”, let me know in the comments, by e-mail, or by filling out the form below! While I’m certainly no expert, I love compiling research to help myself out with ballet and you guys as well, so let me know what you want to see and I’ll add them to the calendar!

Weekly Recap: Ballet, Pointe Shoe, and Running Updates

This past week started off rough.

Sunday 8/11:  We ran about a mile last Sunday to get some of our favorite mac and cheese, but it was too hot out to do anymore than that. We stopped by the library on the way home and I picked up Apollo’s Angels, a history of ballet.

I did a 3o minute barre3 workout (HQ‘s birthday present to me) and a few hours later my left calf started nagging me.  I can’t wait to share more about Apollo’s Angels (once I read more) and Barre3 once I do a few more workouts–but so far, I’m in love with both!

Monday 8/12: We ran about a mile out the pier here (one of my favorite routes to do near our apartment) and both of us were having horrible shin/calf/knee pain. We ran about 3/4 of a mile back before eventually quitting and walking the rest of the way home. I decided to skip ballet.

Tuesday  8/13: I worked for a little in the morning and then we went to an awesome event about becoming an entrepreneur featuring a panel of young entrepreneurs in the city. You can read my recap here.

Wednesday 8/14: Got to pretend I was editor at work for a little and then got some more mac and cheese for lunch. Clearly, I have a mac and cheese problem.

Thursday 8/15: Finally got some more exercise into this week in the form of beginner ballet, which went really wellWe then attempted to go to Night Market here in Philly but the lines were horrible and the tacos I wanted were gone by the time we got there. So we got Jim’s Steaks instead.  This further proves that my life is pretty much the definition of #fatfluential. I exercise, but I eat pretty badly. My legs were also exhausted from ballet plus a ton of walking.

Friday 8/16: Family came down for a last minute so trip, so today meant lots of walking as well. Good news is, I’m now a member of the zoo and I can go whenever I want with up to two guests.

Saturday 8/17: Day of the horrible ballet class. I hate when I have a bad class, especially when my teacher can tell I had a bad class. My legs were just too tired. I went to pointe class for a little but the shoes came off roughly 5 minutes in, and 3 hours later I have a little bit of pain on the top of my foot (yes I realize, my feet are probably too weak).

Good news is, I’m staying on top of the squat challenge and got 80 squats in.

Sunday 8/18: Hellloooooo, rest day. Took it easy with some stretching (and catching up on Doctor Who).

I plan on taking the rest of the week depending on how I feel. Luckily, if I decided I need to take the week off, I’ll be fairly busy with work and friends visiting to not go stir crazy.

How do you keep yourself from going stircrazy from an injury?

Love and Running: Your Responses

Quite a while ago, I put out a post requesting responses to how runner’s felt about running with their significant other. I was curious to see what type of responses I’d get after reading Runner’s World’s Can Love and Running Coexist?

Personally, 9 out of 10 times, HQ and I will be run together, but every once in awhile we’ll split up. I’m a good amount slower runner than he is, so he has to slow down the pace significantly to run with me. Although that’s not usually a problem, sometimes it’ll drive me crazy that he’ll sprint ahead to pass someone/something (without realizing what he’s doing). We ran our last 5k together at the same pace until he sprinted off at the end. I think for our next race, at the end of September, I’ll vote for us running separately so we can both try and get the best time we can. Sometimes I think it’s easier to push myself to a higher pace when by myself, although I’m not sure why–HQ is capable of any speed I will run at.

I’ve always found it funny that in the Runner’s World story, it discusses how females are usually the ones who want to talk and chat during the run–but we’re the opposite. HQ will always be observing everything and talking (mostly because my speed is a conversational pace for him, while it’s not for me). For the most part, I like to keep quiet anyway.

Do you run with your significant other? Why or why not?

“My husband and I often run at different times because that is what our schedules allow.  When we are free at the same time we like to run on the treadmill next to each other.  This allows us to go different paces and still be together.  We have run two road races together and we are looking forward to more.  We start the race together and then follow our individual paces.” –Susan of Simply Modern Dance

“We do not train together for the most part. We have a 5 year old, so one of us has to be home unless we hire a sitter for our runs. Since we prefer to go out first thing in the morning, child care is a little tough to come by, so we coordinate our runs separately. However, we do sign up for most of the same races. We haven’t had any issues organizing at-race care for our son so far, and he loves to watch and do the fun runs when available.” — Jennifer of Runs With Pugs

“I no longer run with my husband. I felt like I was holding him back with his running. He has a much faster pace then i do. I always worry that I hold him back when we do run together. We both like to listen to music when we run but he prefers running inside on a track or treadmill and I prefer outside. we also have difference in WHEN we like to run. He likes early mornings and I prefer late night. Because we dont run together anymore, we have found that actually working out, either to a DVD program or following a program that I built for us is just as romantic as a date with dinner and a movie.” –Danielle of SAD Fitness

Do you worry (if you’re at different paces) about slowing down the other person or if you’re faster leaving the other person behind?

“Only some of the time.  We can do short runs around the neighborhood together with our daughter in the jogging stroller and our son on his bike, but he’s still too little to keep up with us for more than a mile or so.  It’s easier for us to run separately and take turns hanging out with the kids.  As for races, if we’re running for time, we run separately as I’m just a bit faster than he is (for now) – I’d love to be able to run an entire race with him though, maybe when we do one of the Disney ones for fun!” –Kristin, A Mom on The Run

Do you find that you and your significant other want to do different things while running, ie one of you wants to talk, the other would rather listen to music, think, etc.?

“Yes!!  I like to put in my ear buds and zone out, listening to music or podcasts.  He does when he’s alone, but likes to chat if we’re together.  I’m not coordinated enough to run, chat, and breathe all at once!” –Kristin

“My husband has been running for a few years and I am new to the sport.  I have always danced and find the transition challenging. I wasn’t sure what to expect from running together, but it has been better than I could have imagined.  We share the joy of reaching our personal goals and cheering each other on.  It has given us something new to talk about.  Not to mention, racing has give us a new shared experience and we have made new friends through running together.” –Susan

SLS3 Compression Sock Review and Giveaway

I was given two pairs of compression socks in exchange for this review, one for myself, and one for a giveaway. All opinions are my own, not SLS3’s.

A while ago, Sebastian from SLS3 e-mailed me after realizing I was a lover of all things compression because of this blog. And I do. My obsession with compression started after I picked up a pair from City Sports and now I have about 4-5 pairs, all from various brands. I’ve mentioned before that I love them both post-ballet class (as well as rocking compression sleeves during ballet class) as well as during and post-run. As you’ve probably noticed, I’m a big fan of everything pink as well! Almost all of my compression socks are pink or purple, so I loved it when SLS3 sent me a pair of bright pink compression socks with butterflies on them!

I was slightly worried about the sizing when it came to these compression socks. I unfortunately have pretty tiny feet (size 6) but relatively large calves, so it’s a problem when compression socks are sized only by shoe size. Fortunately, SLS3 gives both sizes for their products and I was sent a small/medium pair which fit pretty snuggly. Although they fit pretty tight at the start, they’ve loosened up a little bit to better fit my ginormous calves (without stretching out too much).

Ready for a run!

I love how these compression socks fit and stretch compared to some other brands and the graduated compression these offer seem to work really well for recovery for me, whether it be from a tough run or a painful ballet class. One of my favorite things to do post-run is to throw these on and apply an ice pack directly over the sock.

Color Me Rad Race Round 2 Recap

This weekend my sister, my boyfriend and I did the Color Me Rad 5K. I did the same color race in Philadelphia about a year ago with two of my best friends at Fairmount Park, so when I found out they were going to be in Bethlehem again in August, I jumped at the chance to sign up.

Picking up our bibs went super smoothly this time around as well, other than parking at the location (The Banana Factory in Bethlehem). I was a little bummed they were out of pink and purple sunglasses, but we were pretty late picking our stuff up. My family had intended to go to Musikfest after we picked stuff up, but since we were unable to find parking easily we opted to go home and relax and order pizza instead.

Pre-race and color free!

We had registered for the 9:20 wave, but given the Color Me Rad’s lack of real structure (our information said it was no problem if you missed your wave) we decided to leave as early as we could and jump into the first wave. We arrived at parking around 8:10, to be shuttled to the actual race location. It wasn’t too long of a wait to get on a shuttle.

As soon as we arrived at Arts Quest, you could see color flying everywhere, but as soon as we stepped off the bus they’re wasn’t much direction as to how to get to the start location. It took a fair amount of meandering around the finish line to make our way to the start, but once we did, we joined the next wave and we were off in a crowd of people.

The Race

It was kind of an icky and rainy day unfortunately, but I was determined to not let that bug me, we were off to a quick start, and ran about the first 3/4 mile before taking a break. Pretty much after that, it was too crowded to pick back up pace, but going through the various paint stations was a lot of fun (especially with the pink team who were more enthusiastic than the rest.) Although it was kind of icky, the course was fairly nice (my favorite part was running over a bridge) and although I had trouble finding a bathroom at the start/finish, there was one mid-course (as part of Musikfest)–which wasn’t a problem in the untimed race.

The downfalls? A huge crowd. Those who were trying to run were constantly trying to dodge people so much that we just gave up and walked until the finish.  I would have appreciated different waves for people who were planning on running versus those just walking. I was also extremely annoyed that most people left their empty water bottles alongside the bridge (the water stop was about 2 miles in right before we crossed the bridge for the second time) versus waiting until we crossed it, where there were a lot of recycling  containers. Given that most people were walking, I just found this kind of repulsive.

A long wait to get back to our car was a little annoying as it started to rain (and because there was a whiny teenager in front of us)–but otherwise wasn’t too bad. Overall, while I don’t think I’ll be doing another color run (or other fun run) for a while, it was still a good time.
